BD Garment Owners Dismisses Labor Unrest

New York (PRWEB) May 28, 2006

Leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association on Thursday iterated their view that the unrest by workers on Monday and Tuesday had been anything but labor movement.

The association claims that more 200 factories were damaged during the violence that swept the capital city, Savar and Gazipur. The situation is now calm after a tripartite meeting on Wednesday evening decided to form a board to review minimum wages for workers and ensure other benefits they are entitled to.

‘It was no labor movement. The destruction of factories was done by conspirators and outsiders,’ said Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, a vice-president of the association.

He said they went to the meeting at the invitation of the labour minister and agreed with some decisions of the meeting. The acting president of the association, Abdus Salam Murshedy, said, ‘We agreed on a tripartite committee with representatives from the government, workers and owners and take measures to implement the justified demands of the workers.’

Except a few heavily damaged factories, all garment units restarted their production Thursday morning, with 90 per cent attendance of workers, he said.

Salam said the association started a survey to assess factory damages, which will be completed within the next two or three days, and reiterated the association’s demand for a judicial inquiry into the incidents.

He demanded that the government should also form an industrial police force, initially with 1,000 members, to ensure security of industries.
